Baggage allowances
We’ve simplified our baggage policy across the network, including simplifying our excess bag rates.
The charges stated below apply to Air New Zealand operated flights only and are based on per bag/piece, per one way journey. If your flight is operated by an Air New Zealand partner airline, you will need to check the rates with the airline operating the service.
For international travel the checked baggage allowance is one piece for Economy, two pieces Premium Economy and three pieces Business free (up to 23kg each piece).
New allowances begin 26 May 2010
For all bookings made and ticketed up till 26 May 2010, previous baggage allowances will be honoured, so flights you’ve already got booked will be covered under the baggage rules at the time of booking. Bookings made and/or ticketed after 26 May 2010 will carry the new baggage entitlements.
- If customers are travelling Air New Zealand long-haul to LA, Hong Kong, New Zealand, Australia or the South Pacific and travelling in Economy, they’ll be able to take one checked bag up to 23kg
- This limit increases to two checked bags (up to 23kg each) if travelling with us in Premium Economy
- Travellers can take three pieces (up to 23kg each) when flying with us in Business Premier
If your customers are Gold Elite, Gold, or Koru members, they’ll be allowed to take one extra piece of checked baggage if they are travelling Economy (i.e. maximum two pieces) or Premium Economy (i.e. maximum 3 pieces). Gold Elite, Gold or Koru members travelling in Business Premier will already automatically be eligible for the maximum amount allowed of three pieces (up to 23 kg each).
- For any passengers connecting onto Air New Zealand via another carrier, please check the operating airline's baggage policy
Sporting equipment
When it comes to sporting equipment, all sports gear will be charged at 50% of the additional piece rate for all international flights.
Overweight Bags
Bags that weigh up to 32kgs can still be carried but will incur excess charges. If the bag weighs more than 32kgs the bag will not be carried and the customer will be asked to remove items before the bag is accepted for carriage.
Sporting Allowances – International services only
In addition to checked baggage allowance, a sporting item can be carried as a checked in piece of luggage at 50% of extra bag cost.
Infants and Children
Strollers and car seats will be carried free of charge. Infants will be entitled to the accompanying adult checked baggage allowance.
