Excess baggage charges

We’ve simplified our baggage policy across the network, including simplifying our excess bag rates.

The charges stated below apply to Air New Zealand operated flights only and are based on per bag/piece, per one way journey. If your flight is operated by an Air New Zealand partner airline, you will need to check the rates with the airline operating the service.

For international travel the checked baggage allowance is one piece for Economy, two pieces Premium Economy and three pieces Business free (up to 23kg each piece).

Sporting equipment can be accepted as checked baggage and will be charged at 50% of the normal extra bag charge, providing the equipment does not exceed 23kgs in weight. An additional overweight charge applies if the item is over 23kgs but under 32kgs.

    Bicycles may be accepted as checked baggage, but they need to be packed correctly: the handlebars and pedals turned in or removed, and the whole bicycle wrapped in corrugated cardboard or an equivalent material.
