Medical equipment

We need advance notice to provide any special equipment required.

On codeshare flights the operating carrier's regulations apply. If special equipment is required, you must book the operating carrier's flight number for the segment involved.

Some special equipment is only available in Economy class. Any exceptions to this depend a) on how technically feasible is to provide the equipment in other classes (usually the availability of a suitable power outlet) and b) on the approval of the User Support Manager.

Where passengers provide their own equipment this must have:

  • an 'aircraft-type approved' certificate OR;
  • be checked and approved by Air NZ Engineering prior to departure.

Air New Zealand will not be held responsible for any subsequent breakdown or other operational failure, even where the equipment is Type or Engineering approved.

All aircraft electrical outlets are fitted for the North American two flat pin plugs and are 115v 400hz. As electrical appliances are usually 50/60hz they will not work without a passenger-supplied converter.

Where provision of special equipment requires that seats be blocked off, these seats must be paid for.

Acceptable medical equipment includes:

Continuous Positive Airway Pressure Pump (CPAP)

Medical and equipment clearance is required. Does not require an extra seat.

The CPAP machine must meet the following restrictions to be able to be used in flight:

  • It must be an Air New Zealand approved model or meet FAA approval and have a manufacturers label that indicates it meets those requirements.

  • The device must be able to be stowed in the cabin in a way that meets safety and security regulations. Maximum combined dimensions are: (maximum weight of 7kg (15lbs) and maximum total dimensions (length + width + height) of 115cm (45"))

  • You must provide us with a minimum of 48 hours notice of your intention to use your device if you wish to use aircraft power and check in 1 hour prior to general check in.

  • Please note that aircraft power is not available on domestic flights or on 737 aircraft internationally

CPAP machines that are not approved can be carried as cabin baggage provided they meet normal safety / stowage requirements as above. In these cases the passenger must be made aware that the device can not be used in flight.

Nebulisers

Passengers must provide their own nebulisers.? Make and model of all special equipment must have Air New Zealand approval.

As there is no onboard facility for operating electric powered nebulisers, passengers should use either a 'spacer' or hand held battery driven device.

For emergency use the Physician's Kit on 747 / 777 / 767 / A320 aircraft contains an oxygen driven Nebuliser of the type used in Hospitals and comprehensive drugs for treating asthma.

Quadriplegic harness

All Air New Zealand aircraft (except the BEH aircraft) can be equipped with a special quadriplegic harness to provide additional restraint in the aircraft seat. ?Medical clearance is required.

Portable Oxygen Concentrators

Medical clearance is always required due to a POC delivering medical oxygen.

The POC must meet the following restrictions to be able to be used in flight:

  •  It must be an Air New Zealand model or meet FAA approval and have a manufacturers label that indicates it meets those requirements
  • The passenger must be able to use teh POC without assistance.
  • A minimum of 72 hours notice is required for medical clearance and if the passengers wishes to use aircraft power they must check in 1 hour prior to general check in.
  • Due to limited access to the aircraft power supply its is recommended that the device be able to run on batteries. You should provide sufficient batteries for 150% of the planned duration of the flight.
  • Aircraft power is not available on domestic flights or on 737 aircraft internationally
  • The device must be able to be stowed in the cabin in a way that meets safety and security regulations maximum combined dimensions are:
(maximum weight of 7kg (15lbs) and maximum total dimensions (length + width + height) of 115cm (45"))

The POC does not require an extra seat.

Stretchers

DOMESTIC

Not available on any Domestic service. However, for persons not exceeding 1 metre (39 inches) in recumbent length, an alternative method which secures a person across two seats of a three seat row is available on 737 services.

INTERNATIONAL

Available in the economy class cabin of 747 / 767 / 777 services. Medical clearance is required. The inflight stretcher is curtained to ensure privacy but has no ancillary attachments except for two pillows and blankets. A fully qualified medical escort must accompany the passenger. Stretcher passengers on life support will have their breathing assisted by a ventilator. As these are oxygen driven, they will require the dual 3134C fixed oxygen bottle installation.

Leg rests

The current Air New Zealand fleet does not allow for the provision of leg rests.
